French A level
The WJEC AS and A level in French provides an engaging and exciting opportunity for learners to build on their previous study of French.
Through social, intellectual and cultural themes learners will be able to develop their linguistic knowledge and cultural understanding of the countries or communities where the language is spoken. An opportunity to study literature and film will allow learners to undertake a deeper analysis of language structures and increase their cultural awareness as part of an integrated approach to language learning.
How will I be assessed? (Assessment)
AS Unit 1: Speaking. Non-exam assessment: 12-15 minutes (12% of qualification 48 marks)
AS Unit 2: Listening, reading, translation and critical response in writing. 2 hour 30 minutes (28% of qualification 84 marks)
A2 Unit 3: Speaking. Non-exam assessment: 11-12 minutes (18% of qualification 72 marks)
A2 Unit 4: Listening, reading and translation. 1 hour 45 minutes (30% of qualification 100 marks)
A2 Unit 5: Critical and analytical response in writing (closed-book). 1 hour 30 minutes (12% of
qualification 40 marks)
What kind of work will I do outside the classroom?
Students are encouraged to broaden their range of vocabulary and structures through reading articles on music, sport and current affairs on the web. They are also encouraged to watch films, series and news items and listen to French radio channels.
What could I do at the end of my course? (Progressions)
French is good for your career: The ability to speak English and French is an advantage on the international job market. It opens doors to companies in Britain, France and other French-speaking parts of the world, such as Canada, Switzerland, Belgium and the continent of Africa. As the world’s fifth biggest economy and third-ranking destination for foreign investment, France is a key economic partner.
