Clubs and Extra Curricular

At Dyffryn Taf, we encourage all pupils to become involved in the wider life of the school and, hopefully, there is something here for everyone. We firmly believe that broadening experiences through extracurricular activities adds to the personal development of our pupils, supporting them to improve their self-confidence, self-esteem and all round wellbeing.

We offer a real range of opportunities within sport, with competitive teams organised for netball, hockey, rugby, football. athletics, cricket and rounders. School teams at all age groups compete regularly against other secondary schools during and after school hours and pupils have the opportunity to represent Carmarthen and District, Brianne District, Carmarthenshire, Dyfed and at national level in a wide range of activities.

We also have a fantastic, state of the art gym facility, that all pupils can access both during lessons as well as lunchtime. This provides a great opportunity for all of our pupils to further develop all aspects of their physical health, whilst also enjoying the social and emotional benefits associated with exercise. We have a very proactive Health and Wellbeing department, who will work hard to run other sports activities that pupils may show an interest in.

We have very busy and energetic Music and Drama departments, with many events run throughout the year. Pupils are given a range of opportunities to act, sing, play musical instruments or even develop the production elements of stage management, lighting, sound, costume making and marketing. All of these skills are then given an opportunity to shine in the School Musical production, Christmas and Summer concerts and various other events throughout the year. We also offer peripatetic music tuition during the school day, where pupils will have access to a weekly instrument lesson. This is a great opportunity to either learn a new instrument or to refine skills in an instrument your child may already have learnt to play.

Dyffryn Taf offers excellent opportunities for pupils to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The school is one of the largest D of E centres in the county, with over 100 pupils taking part each year at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. The award, which begins in Year 10, is a great way to meet new friends, learn new skills and develop as a person, whilst giving something back to the community in the process.

We also offer a wide range of educational trips and visits, to help broaden the experiences available to pupils. This includes site visits, theatre trips and field work to places local to Dyffryn Taf as well as further afield. We also provide opportunities for our pupils to experience the world outside of Wales, with countries such as Iceland, Italy, Canada, Finland, Portugal, France and Spain being just some examples of destinations in the world that Dyffryn Taf pupils have had the opportunity to visit. We try to be sensitive to family budgets and offer a range of trips at different levels of cost.
