Welcome to the Mathematics Department

Mathematics is essential for everyday life and understanding our world. It is also essential to science, technology and engineering, and the advances in these fields on which our economic future depends.

It is therefore fundamentally important to ensure that all pupils have the best possible mathematics education. They need to understand the mathematics they learn so they can be creative in solving problems, as well as being confident and fluent in developing and using the mathematical skills so valued in the world of industry and higher education.

The Maths Curriculum at Dyffryn Taf is designed to provide a smooth transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 and on to GCSE and A-Level, for students of all abilities.

Students will study for two GCSEs in Mathematics - GCSE Mathematics/Mathematics Numeracy (WJEC).

What kinds of things will I study?

Mathematics is an essential part of everyday life. It is therefore important that you gain basic mathematical skills in order to be able to function effectively on a day to day basis when you leave school. The purpose of the Mathematics course is to develop knowledge and skills to encourage confidence and enjoyment in the subject, and for you then to be able to apply them in your daily life. The way we teach mathematics and numeracy here at Dyffryn Taf is varied and incorporates the ideas of using and applying Mathematics to functional questions and to real life problems.

The four main areas you will study are:

  • Number (e.g. percentages, decimals, household finance)
  • Algebra (e.g. equations, substitution, factorising)
  • Geometry and Measure (e.g. angles, constructions, symmetry, circles)
  • Statistics (e.g. statistical diagrams, probability)

There are three tiers;

  • Higher Tier covers A*- D grades
  • Intermediate Tier covers B - E grades
  • Foundation Tier covers D - G grades.

You will also sit another GCSE called Numeracy. This is a separate GCSE qualification and the questions are mathematical but reset very much in “real-life” contexts.

The three tiers here follow the same structure as mathematics. For all three tiers there is a non-calculator exam and a calculator exam.

How will my work be assessed?

Each GCSE has two papers.

  • Unit 1 - Non-calculator
  • Unit 2 - Calculator

(Foundation 1½ hours each; Intermediate and Higher 1¾hours each)

How can I progress my learning in this subject after Year 11?

Mathematics is a compulsory subject at GCSE as it frequently occurs in our everyday life. It is expected that most young people in Wales will take both Mathematics GCSEs. It will also support your ability to access learning in other subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Business, Design Technology and Economics.

Both of our courses will help you to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods, techniques and concepts required for you to progress into mathematics or mathematically-related disciplines or employment routes. Mathematics is required for most jobs, and for entry into Higher Education. Many employers request a C grade, as do most universities. Some degree courses may require a minimum of B grade (e.g. engineering and medicine).

It is considered an essential requirement for careers in engineering, architecture, construction, nursing and medicine, teaching, science and industry.

You can continue your progression in the subject of mathematics by studying A-Level Mathematics in the Sixth Form at Dyffryn Taf. This could then be a pathway to higher levels of study at universities across the country.

The WJEC GCE AS and A level in Mathematics provides a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study. It encourages learners to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise its importance in their own lives and to society.
